Real Madrid forward Lucas Vazquez believes his teammate Marco Asensio has the potential to become one of the world’s best footballers.
The 26-year-old has backed his compatriot to win the Ballon d’Or in the future after having made a bright start to his Los Blancos career.
Asensio had his breakthrough season with the European champions during the previous campaign as he bagged 10 goals in 38 outings across all competitions. He has since had an excellent European championship with the Spain Under 21s and he has taken this form into the new season with Real Madrid.
The 21-year-old has already notched four goals in five games for Zinedine Zidane’s side this term, and Vazquez had lauded the three-time Spain international who joined him in Julen Lopetegui’s squad as a late replacement for the injured Vitolo.
He told Cadena SER: “He is spectacular. He is at a very high level and still has to grow. We hope to enjoy him a lot. He is very humble and takes everything with ease. It’s soon to say about the Ballon d’Or, but I think so.”
The emergence of Asensio at the Bernabeu have put more pressure on experienced players such as Gareth Bale, who was booed off for his poor showing in the 2-2 draw against Valencia last weekend. Speculation continues to link the Welshman with a move to Old Trafford, but it appears that Real Madrid will stick with the attacker for at least to gauge his performances.
Real Madrid have made an unbeaten start to the new season with victories over Manchester United and Barcelona in the European Super Cup and Supercopa de Espana respectively, while they are placed fifth in the league standings. Los Blancos have won the Champions League titles in each of the last two seasons, but they are set to face their toughest test yet with Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur drawn in their group.
